Durmitor became a National Park in 1952 and UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. At 80 kilometers long and 1,300 meters deep, the Tara River Canyon in Durmitor National Park is the deepest gorge in Europe. Durmitor mountain has 18 glacial lakes, the best known of which is the Black Lake.

Durmitor mountain is the centre of Montenegrin mountain tourism, with most tourist facilities concentrated around the town of Žabljak. But also other towns in the region offer a great diversity of activities, and are a bit more off the beaten track. Durmitor National Park offers 25 marked mountain hiking trails of various length and for different levels of physical fitness.

For wildlife encounters, Montenegro offers excellent opportunities to see deer, chamoix, eagles, buzzards, vultures, and perhaps even a brown bear, lynx, or jackal.
